This four-day intensive course will integrate self-awareness and self-development with the professional role of a psychotherapist. Since the therapist is the primary instrument in the delivery of psychotherapy, personal development needs to be an essential part of professional training.
This course will meet the following Entry-to-Practice Competencies required for registration with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO):
- Demonstrate awareness of the impact of the therapist’s subjective context on the therapeutic process.
- Recognize the impact of power dynamics within the therapeutic relationship.
- Protect client from imposition of the therapist’s personal issues.
- Employ effective and congruent verbal and non-verbal communication.
- Use of self-disclosure appropriately.
This comprehensive course will provide both the theoretical and empirical background for effective use of self in therapeutic context. Students will also learn how to practice non-conditional acceptance, listen with authentic empathy, and manage transference and countertransference. In addition, participants will be able to assess key areas of personal development, discover their dysfunctional assumptions, and resolve personal issues which may undermine therapy effectiveness.
This course will include lectures, demonstrations, role-play, case studies, group discussion, and will provide assistance, if requested, in completing a personal portfolio for application to the CRPO.
Fee: $800.00, including HST and refreshments. For INPM members, fee: $640.00 (20% discount).
